You may have wondered which slot you're supposed to install a graphics card into on a motherboard when there's more than one slot. If it has only one PCI Express x16 slot, the choice is easy, but some motherboards have more than one PCI Express x16 slot for multiple graphics card support. These motherboards work just fine with only one video card, regardless of how many open slots are available. The graphics card should go into the first PCI Express x16 slot. However, lower slots are usually capable of running the card as well.

Slot Selection and Compatibility

That means that—potentially—any storage or disk drive, GPU or port expansion, or low-power gadget that uses a USB connection, could all be mounted on a card plugged into the M.2 slot at the same time. The reality is a little more complicated—for example, a single M.2 slot only has four PCI Express lanes. A PCI card with 32-bit must be connected to a slot with 32-bit connectivity, similarly, a card with 64-bit must be connected with a 64-bit connectivity. The number of PCI slots in a CPU depends on the manufacturer, however, you can add a few more if you need.

PCI Express slots and cards are fairly versatile as far as compatibility is concerned. The graphics card might activate and work correctly in either slot without needing any settings adjustments. BIOS or jumper adjustments may be necessary to activate additional slots. However, the only way to know for sure is to install the card in the slot and turn the computer on. Testing the slot will not damage the computer or the card.

Primary and Secondary Slots

Some motherboards treat one of the slots as primary and the other as secondary. It is possible that the secondary slot is actually an x8 version and will not have the same performance capabilities as the primary slot. You can avoid most of the potential problems by using the primary slot, which is usually the top one closest to the CPU. If the motherboard has four slots, any of the primary slots will work without any configuration adjustments. You may want to use another slot because the graphics card may be large and obstruct another component when installed in the first slot. The motherboard's manual will specify recommended slots as well.

Bad Ports

PCI Express slots are prone to power surges and mechanical failure like any other part of the computer. In the event that one of the PCI Express slots fails, you can move the graphics card to the secondary slot. The secondary slot will still be influenced by BIOS and jumper settings even if the primary slot is dead. This can be a problem if the primary slot is down and you can't get into the BIOS to adjust the settings. You may be able to reset the BIOS and get the motherboard to enable the second port in this case by unplugging the computer and removing the battery backup for five minutes before restarting.

SLI and CrossFire

There are two graphics card standards that support merging the two cards into acting as one more powerful card: Nvidia's SLI and AMD's CrossFire. Any motherboard that supports these will only support one of the two standards and the graphics cards need to match that standard for it to work. However, single graphics cards will work fine without SLI or CrossFire. Additionally, multiple cards can be used to support additional monitors without SLI or CrossFire support.
