Question: On my DELL PowerEdge server, the front LCD displays “E1810 HDD 1 fault” error message. How do I fix this issue?

Answer: The message itself is self explanatory as it says “HDD 1 fault” indicating that the hard drive #1 failed. Following are my recommendations on what you can do to fix this.

Verify the Hard Drive Status

If the failed hard drive is part of RAID-1, none of the application running on the server would’ve impacted. View the status of that hard drive to make sure it says “disk fault” or something similar from the PERC controller.

If you have installed DELL OMSA or Dellmgr, you can verify the status of the hard disk without rebooting the server.

If you don’t have OMSA or Dellmgr, you should restart the system to launch the PERC configuration utility.

In this case, don’t bother with the reboot, as hard drive replacement is just a plug and play.

Remove the faulty Hard Drive

If you have support contract with DELL, call them and provide your dell service tag, and request for a replacement disk. You should get it within couple of days.

Once you have the disk, just remove the faulty disk from the bay#1 (or whatever bay number it says on your LCD display). Now, the LCD message will change to “E1812 HDD 1 removed“.

Insert the new Hard Drive

Insert the new hard drive into the bay#1. If this disk is part of RAID-1, you’ll see both the disks that are part of the RAID-1 will start blinking. This indicates that the RAID-1 is syncing the data between the disks.

Finally, the message “E1810 HDD 1 fault” will disappear from the front LCD panel. The LCD panel will now display the standard blue light with “DELL PowerEdge” message.

After rebuilding a drive array attached to one of the HP Smart Array Controllers listed under Platforms Affected (below), error messages similar to the following may appear during Power-On Self-Test (POST):

Slot [x] Array P400 Controller (512, V5.20) 2 Logical Drives
1716-Slot [x] Drive Array - Unrecoverable Media Errors Detected on Drives
during previous Rebuild or Background Surface Analysis (ARM) scan.
Errors will be fixed automatically when the sector(s) are overwritten.
Backup and Restore recommended.

These messages appear by design when the controller is running a version of the firmware dated 2007 or later, if unrecoverable media errors were detected on one (or more) drives during the rebuild process.

These messages do NOT appear when the controller is running a version of the firmware dated 2006 or earlier, because the older firmware will terminate the rebuild process if an unrecoverable media error occurred.

After the operating system has been restarted, Rebuild and Background Surface Analysis events will be added to the Event Log if the Smart Array Event Notification service is enabled.

SCOPE

Any HP Smart Array Controller listed under Platforms Affected below running a firmware version dated 2007 or later.

RESOLUTION

When these messages appear after a rebuild, attempt to correct the condition by performing one (or both) of the following:

  • Run a File System Check and Restore from a Backup

To check the file system, use a utility such as SCANDISK or CHKDSK (Windows), or fsck (Linux). These utilities can be used to identify files that cannot be accessed or read due to media errors. Although the file system check may be unable to correct the unrecoverable media errors, it may be able to identify the files that should be restored from a backup.

If the File System Check did not correct or identify the files that cannot be accessed or read, perform the following:

  • Reconfigure the Drive Array and Restore from a Backup

If the file system check is unable to correct the unrecoverable media errors, or unable to identify the files which cannot be accessed, HP recommends recreating the array and restoring to all logical drives attached to that controller, from a backup.

The 1716 error messages will not reappear if additional media errors do not occur during a subsequent scan or file system check, or after files have been restored to the reconfigured array from a backup.
